ARM LIFT-BRACHIOPLASTY

What causes our arms to sag?

Weight loss and age are the most common reasons that our arms sag. Women are more prone to saggy arms than men, although it is not abnormal for men to undergo an arm lift procedure.

What happens during the arm lift procedure?

There are two types of arm lift procedures that you can have done.

·         Upper arm lift: This procedure is done to remove excess skin that droops from the upper arm area. First your surgeon will make an incision along your arm. The placement of this incision varies from patient to patient depending on how much skin is being removed and where exactly it is being removed from. Usually, the incision extends from armpit to elbow and will be curved or z-shaped to minimize scarring. Excess tissue is removed and liposuction will be performed to eliminate stubborn fat cells.
·         Mini arm lift: This procedure is almost the same as with the upper arm lift, but the incision is smaller. Typically, the incision for a mini arm lift is made in the armpit. Like in a traditional arm lift excess tissues and stubborn fat cells are removed.
·         Lasertight liposuction: This procedure is for excess fat and skin in the upper arm with less laxity than in patients that require an upper arm lift or mini arm lift. Excess fat is removed and skin will remodel over a six month period.
·
What type of arm lift do I need?

The type of arm lift you need will depend on how much revision is necessary. If you’ve lost a large amount of weight, you will probably require a traditional upper arm lift. On the other hand, if you have only lost a moderate amount of weight and the excess skin on your arms is minimal then a mini arm lift is the right option for you. You may also be a candidate for lasertight liposuction. Your surgeon will discuss each surgery type with you during your initial consultation and determine which one will work best on your arms.

How long does this procedure take?

Arm lift surgery takes about three hours, about an hour and a half per arm.

Will I be given anesthesia?

During your arm lift procedure your surgeon will ensure you are as comfortable as can be. You will be given general anesthesia.

What are the side effects of an arm lift?

As with any surgical procedure there are associated side effects. These are temporary and should not be a cause for concern. Arm lifts are low-risk and the side effects are usually felt within the first 48 hours, dissipating as your body heals. Many patients report bruising, swelling, tightness, light bleeding, numbness and a tingling sensation. You will probably not experience all of these side effects, and you may experience none at all. It all depends on your body.

When will I see the results of my arm lift?

Once the swelling has subsided you’ll notice your beautiful new arms. Most patients report that they see the full results of their arm lift within two to three months following their excisional surgery, and that the area is toned and the skin appears more taut. With lasertight liposuction, the skin is tighter immediately following the surgery and begins to remodel (tighten) more at six weeks and continues until about 6 months

When can I resume my everyday activities?

Within two weeks you should be able to get back to your normal routine. Exercise, however, should be taken lightly at first. Start by walking slowly and avoid lifting heavy objects or doing anything strenuous. Walking is great because it reduces the risk of blood clots and helps with the healing process. Wait at least four to six weeks before resuming your full exercise regime. If you are someone who undertakes weight training as part of your fitness regimen, you will have to start with light weights at first until your arms are fully healed and can handle lifting what you normally would before you had your surgery.

Will I have a scar?

Scarring is normal after any surgical procedure. Nonetheless, your surgeon will conceal the scar as much as they possibly can and you will notice that the scar will begin to fade after about a year. There are creams and scar treatments available that you can ask your doctor about but most people find the scars are barely noticeable.

Arm lifts and smoking

As with any surgery, if you are a smoker, you will need to quit before your procedure. There is a direct correlation between smoking and how the body heals itself. Your body will not be able to heal properly if you smoke. Tobacco products make our blood thicker and restrict the amount of oxygen that is carried through the body.
