ARE BREAST IMPLANTS SAFE?
Silicone implants have been demonstrated to be safe and
effective for women who are considering breast augmentation surgery. Multiple
studies have been performed on these implants, and there has been no evidence
of significant issues associated with silicone versus saline implants. Any
foreign body in a patient has a small risk, but there is little evidence of any
significant medical risk.
Implant position (submuscular, subfascial, dual-plane,
subglandular) will have a large impact on feel as well as how much of the
woman's soft tissue is covering the implant. The most common areas for
palpability are along the bottom and lateral aspects of the breast
augmentation. Silicone implants have a softer feel and may have less rippling,
resulting in a more natural feel. Size is also an important determinant, if a
small implant is completely covered by a good amount of natural breast it will
be less palpable than a large implant directly under the gland of a woman with
very little body fat or breast tissue to begin with.
There are some women in our doctors’ practice with
tastefully done breast augmentations with well hidden scars who have had
